‘ For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us is not of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.’
2 Timothy 1:6-7
Where fear stands to hold us captive from walking into all that God has for us, faith speaks a louder word, and calls us forward and upwards. What if a life of faith isn’t so much about eliminating fear than it is about learning to live a life beyond fear? The truth is, fear isn’t our battle to fight – it never was. We, in our own strength, cannot eliminate fear by fighting it on our own. We can only eliminate fear, or live beyond fear, by stirring up the faith that is already inside of us.
In his letter to Timothy, Paul connects the fanning into flame of the gift inside of us, to the power we need to live beyond the fear. The scripture is about more than just our ability to quote love, power and sound mind over our fear. It’s about accessing faith within ourselves by fanning into flame the gift of God’s spirit Himself, living inside of us. If scripture was about us then it would always be limited by our ability to live it out. Preceding every great miracle in the Bible, was a great act of faith not great works. We are told that ‘By faith… Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, the people passed through the Red Sea, the walls of Jericho fell’. If you want to live beyond fear, you need to fan into flame the gift of God ALREADY given to us by Christ Jesus. This stirs up faith, a faith established on the basis of KNOWING that God gave us love when we had nothing to give in return.
We don’t find peace in the events of our circumstance, we find calm in our confidence in Christ. We find it in the Prince of Peace, the Author of our tomorrow, the silencer of fears and the lover of our souls. Amidst fear and the unknown, cling to the name of Jesus. For it’s in the position of his presence, standing in faith and perfect love, that he fights for us. Fear doesn’t stand a chance when you let the Spirit of God stir up what Heaven has placed inside of you.
